The lack of good corporate governance is one of the main challenges facing the microfinance sector in Latin America and the Caribbean. Corporate governance is related to an institution's internal operating and control procedures. It plays a key role in creating transparency and trust for investors and in attracting capital.
Good corporate governance contributes to efficient management and to considering stakeholder interests, boosting the microfinance institution's reputation and integrity and fostering customer trust.
The BBVA Microfinance Foundation wants to contribute to the development of the microfinance sector in order to extend financial products and services to more people, under better conditions.
To do so, the Foundation has several lines of work underway, including strengthening corporate governance in the microfinance sector as a key aspect for ensuring its growth and expansion.
To this end, the Foundation has created the “Universal Code of Corporate Governance for Microfinance Institutions” and the “Guide to Adopting Good Governance Principles in Microfinance Institutions”, two benchmark documents for the sector. In order to disseminate these initiatives and promote their adoption, the BBVA Microfinance Foundation will organize Corporate Governance Training Workshops in eight Latin American countries.
