Finance for inclusion and development
The BBVA Microfinance Foundation is working towards a better future for the most disadvantaged people in society.
Since its public presentation in May 2007 by Her Majesty Queen Sofia, the BBVA Microfinance Foundation has built up a current portfolio of 1 million clients assisted, with an accumulated impact on more than 3 million people. It has 4,777 employees and 353 branch offices in the six countries in which it is currently present in Latin America (Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Panama).
The Foundation’s activity can be defined as follows:
In 2011, the BBVA Microfinance Foundation:
- Made microfinance products and services available to 1,000,000 people to enable them to undertake productive activities and improve their lives and those of their families;
- Prepared a Universal Code of Corporate Governance and a guide for applying the principles of Good Governance to microfinance institutions (MFIs). These aretwo key documents for the microfinance sector;
- Trained more than 1,200 microfinance specialists through its Credit Officer Training Program;
- Trained more than 100 board members of microfinance institutions in good governance through its skills Workshops in Corporate Governance for MFIs.
