Regarding outside institutions

  • It appears that governments are set to continue acting in the same way, which may pose a problem for the industry’s development. The outlook will only change if the international players manage to convey to these governments the importance of proceeding according to best practices.
  • Cooperation agencies will continue to play a key role in the industry’s organisation and in the dissemination of best practices in those countries in which the sector is less developed. In those countries in which the industry is more mature, these agencies will become involved in more sophisticated operations, such as investing in the creation of institutions, in investment vehicles or in fx risk mitigation funds, as well as in supporting institutions that wish to make public offers for the subscription of their shares, as BRI did in 2003 with the support of the IFC. It is also to be expected that they will assume greater risks in these kinds of countries, backing the development of new products or financing institutions that are in the process of consolidation.
  • There will foreseeably be a greater presence of financial holdings with significant public investment.
